Abstract :
New $2,000 Environmental Prize. We are new to grantmaking for environmental causes and do not understand the range of possibilities in the field. We know it could be endless but we want to understand how the filed divides and subdivides into related factors. We need a typology that gives us the big picture of the range of environmental challenges faced in the United States from a very large scale down to a small scale to develop our funding categories.

Who and how many people will benefit from its ultimate solution?
We like to operate at the community level and are interested in urban environments primarily but political subdivisions, states, or multi-state regions are possible.

Target population located :
The population of interest resides in any community in the United States in which environmental threats that can be remediated exist. We want to understand large-scale and challenges parsed or factored into successively smaller-scale issues. The potential degree of harm to human life.
crowdsourcing

Special or noteworthy characteristics of the target population :
We are specifically interested in urban threats such as lead paint, drinking water, airborne polution, etc. But we want to know more about the field in larger issues such as coastal habitat and wet land preservation near urban areas.

Description :
We are considering starting to make grants to nonprofit organizations that work in the wide range of environmental issues but we want to start with an in-depth survey and typology of the filed and an understanding of those environmental issues that threaten human life and quality of life.
crowdsourcing

Describe the difference in the target population if a solution is adopted and implemented:
Human life will be protected, quality of life will be extended, and natural systems of support will coexist with communities. In particular we are less interested in but still need to categorize the range of threats to wild habitat, wildlife, and general conditions not near concentrated human populations. We also want to know how to contact thought leaders in the various fields and disciplines.
crowdsourcing

Measure of Success :
We will select a winning response from among the solutions to this request by depth and range of environmental challenges, notable knowledge of ways to successfully mediate challenges, and details of associated thought leaders in the field. Where remediation costs of a solution to any particular challenge is roughly known or suspected, it should be noted. We are looking for a seminar type scan, not specific detailed solutions to a particular challenge.
crowdsourcing

The grant maker wants proposed solutions that are sustainable after grant funding ends. Possible ways to secure future income include:
Yes, where a sustainable solution to a particular challenge is known, it should be noted as quidance for us when building collaborations.
crowdsourcing

Urgency :
We are patient but want to get on with our education in urban environmental challenges. Immediacy, urgency, timely, distant, any range of temporal sense could be helpful across the various challenges.
